Legacies Needed – The Sheppard Trust

During 1855, Elizabeth Sheppard inherited a sum of money; the amount is unknown to us. Having decided to use this money for the benefit of others, she is said to have consulted a local clergyman and a personal friend called Mr Arnold, who advised her to establish homes offering rent free accommodation for respectable ladies with limited incomes. She quickly realised that there were indeed many women of education and refinement who had fallen into financial difficulties, often through no fault of their own.

On the 14 December 1855, Miss Elizabeth Sheppard accordingly founded the Society which was to be known as “The Annuitants’ Home”

And so 163 years later the Trust is still upholding her wishes, unfortunately not rent free!!

The Sheppard Trust is a charity providing sheltered housing for 29 elderly ladies who are in need of low-cost, comfortable and secure homes, with a community spirit, and support when it is needed.

A secure and comfortable home makes an enormous difference, especially in later years. In today’s London property market, Sheppard Trust residents have the security of knowing their homes will remain affordable and well-maintained.

Priority is given to those in the greatest need and residents often come to us from insecure or unsettled accommodation. Our work therefore contributes towards reducing homelessness amongst older people, and reducing social care costs by helping residents remain independent and active. As our residents get older we provide support to help them maintain their independence. Our wardens help residents and liaise with agencies to arrange care packages, “meals on wheels” and house hold help and check that all is running smoothly.

Housing for older people has never been more important, as the number of older people increases, life expectancy rises, and people are enabled to stay in their homes longer in life. For those who do not have the means to buy or rent on the open market there is a huge need for good quality, affordable provision. The Trust’s current properties have served their purpose well for many years in providing secure and comfortable homes, but the physical limitations of the buildings are already restricting us and will not meet the needs for the next generation of older women.

By relocating, the Trust will be able to develop first class extra care housing for a much greater number of residents, built to the best in modern standards for older people. Extra care housing comprises self-contained homes with design features and support services that create an enabling environment and foster the independence of older residents.

Our vision includes a tailored on-site care offer to meet individual needs and a range of community activity giving choices for an active and fulfilling old age. The next stage is to find the right location.

Miss Sheppard’s vision and ethos is just has valid today as it was in 1855 and we hope to carry that vision forward for the next 100 years.

“The event was well put together and executed, and the traffic of potential customers for us was high. We had a number of enquiries regarding our services after the event and we feel our attendance there was important to our overall brand exposure. We feel a Law event of this size without Euromoney Legal Training present could potentially be hurtful to us as a business. We would recommend you to attend and shall ourselves be there again in 2008.”

“Many thanks for the prompt service.”
