Data protection: and now for some good news…

Since the GDPR and the Data Protection Act (DPA) 2018 were brought into operation a year ago, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has received 144,376 complaints.

Here’s why that’s a good thing.

The GDPR and DPA 2018 were introduced to make sure that we place the individual at the heart of all our data protection measures. Through better access, higher levels of knowledge and increased information about what steps to take, consumers are indeed feeling more empowered. Individuals are starting to expect and demand more from the organisations with which they interact and, accordingly, are making more complaints when things go wrong. The figures prove it.

To file under ‘work still in progress’ is the rather less encouraging statistic that, from April 2018-2019, there were 14,000 reported data breaches in the UK. This figure, which is a four-fold increase over the previous 12 months, places the UK in the top three countries in Europe for number of breaches for that year (source: Business Cloud, data released in February 2019). Accordingly, the ICO have imposed significant fines on 29 businesses so far, with more to come, they say.

What both sets of figures clearly reveal is that there’s no room for complacency. The introduction of the GDPR and the DPA 2018 was not a deadline but the start of an on-going process, and when it comes to building and protecting trust with your clients, that process needs constant monitoring and updating to make it as risk-tight as possible.
